Estadio de Bata: Equatorial Guinea’s Best Football Temple

It is the biggest in the country and considered one of the most modern stadiums in Africa.


Of the four stadiums that were retained to host matches for the 2015 Africa Cup of Nation, the stadium in Bata is the biggest and is considered as one of the most modern stadiums on the continent. The stadium was originally built in 2007, but extensively renovated in 2011 for the 2012 edition of the Africa Cup of Nations which Equatorial Guinea co-hosted with Gabon.

The first match to re-open the stadium was a friendly between the national teams of Equatorial Guinea and South Africa on the 6th of January 2012. As a result of the renovation works, the capacity of the stadium was increased by 13,000 seats, a roof was added, and the interior as well as exterior upgraded. The stadium now has a capacity of 40.000 seats. At the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations the stadium hosted 6 group matches, a quarter-final, and the semi-final between Zambia and Ghana (1-0).

As the name depicts, Estadio de Bata is located in the city of Bata, which is the largest city of Equatorial Guinea with a population of about 250.000 people. The stadium lies on the outskirts of the city at about 7 kilometres south-east of the centre of the city. The city is Bata is reputed for its petroleum industry.

During the 2015 AFCON, the stadium will host the opening game between host Equatorial Guinea and Congo as well as the following matches; Burkina Faso versus Gabon, Equatorial Guinea versus Burkina Faso, Gabon versus Congo, Gabon versus Equatorial Guinea and the Democratic Republic of Congo versus Tunisia encounters. It will also host a quarter final game, semi final match and the final of the tournament on February 8th.
