Georges Leekens 'Mac The Knife'

He won many titles both as a player and a coach.

Georges Leekens is a former player turned coach who has registered a great deal of success both as a player and a coach. As a player he won five Belgian league titles and one cup title. He was nicknamed “Mac the knife” due to his play style and tackling skills. After quitting playing, Leekens reconverted to coaching, training some of the best clubs in Belgium and abroad.

He also served as coach of the Belgian national team but abandoned the job to take up a coaching position with Club Bruges. He was appointed coach of the Tunisian national team in March 2014 and immediately embarked on rejuvenating the squad. 14 of the 26 players pre-selected for the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations come from the local Tunisian league as Georges Leekens fished from the pond of the Olympic squad.

His spell at the helm of the Carthage Eagles has been successful as Tunisia qualified for the final round of the tournament on the 4th day of play of the qualifiers with two days of play remaining. He was the first to start preparing for the tournament in Equatorial Guinea beginning his training camp as early as December 26th. He equally programmed three warm up matches for the Carthage Eagles though he obtained only two, Algeria and Mali. An impressive performance from the Carthage Eagles at the 30th edition of the AFCON in Equatorial Guinea could see his two-year contract extended.
