Handshakes, Flowers For Chantal Biya

The First Lady received 2015 New Year wishes from the wives of members of the diplomatic corps and those of the national constituted corps on January 9, 2015.

Tradition was once more respected at the East Wing of the Unity Palace as Cameroon’s First Lady, Chantal Biya on Friday, January 9, 2015 received New Year Wishes.  

The 2015 New Year wishes to the First Lady had a key innovation that tied with the security context of the country. The wives of members of the national constituted corps and other specialized groups carried messages that read, “Happy New Year to the First Lady.” “We express solidarity to our defence forces” and “We say yes to peace.”  The   First Lady’s well-wishers also expressed their support and solidarity to President Paul Biya. The messages were waved as the First Lady came out, moved round, chatted and shared with the cheering well-wishers. The relaxed phase of the event was animated by a number of musicians.

The wives of members of the diplomatic corps set the ball rolling in the solemn handshakes, hugs and taking of memorable pictures with the First Lady Chantal Biya. The wife of the outgoing Ambassador of Algeria to Cameroon who is dean of the diplomatic corps, Milat Toufik led the delegation. She handed a bouquet of flowers to Chantal Biya. After the handshakes, hugs and taking of historic pictures with each of the guests, the First Lady shared a drink with them, chatted and also took memorable group pictures.

For the wives of members of the national constituted corps and other specialized groups, over 25 delegations presented New Year Wishes to Chantal Biya. Marcie Niat, the wife of the President of the Senate, set the ball rolling in this phase of the event as she led the delegation of wives of Bureau members of the Senate.

This was followed by Cavaye Fadimatou, wife of the Speaker of the National Assembly who led the delegation of wives of Bureau members of the National Assembly. Ali Agnès Françoise, the wife of the Vice Prime Minister, Minister Delegate at the Presidency in charge of Relations with the Assemblies led the delegation of wives of members of government and people ranking as such.  Each of the well-wishers went back home with a special New Year souvenir gift from the First Lady Chantal Biya.
