Sino-Cameroon: Converging Views On International Issues

Cameroon’s Minister of External Relations held a working session with the visiting Chinese Foreign Minister, H.E. Wang Yi on January 13, 2014 in Yaounde.

Cameroon’s Minister of External Relations, Pierre Moukoko Mbonjo and visiting Foreign Affairs Minister of the People’s Republic of China, Wang Yi, have stated that both countries have convergent views pertaining to almost all international and regional issues; proof of fraternal relations and mutual trust that link both countries.

Speaking during a press conference yesterday January 13, 2015 after a working session that held at the Ministry of External Relations in Yaounde, Minister Pierre Moukoko Mbonjo said both countries enjoy a very dynamic, fruitful, win-win and exemplary cooperation. “We feel honoured by the first visit of a Chinese Foreign Minister to Cameroon after the visits of a Chinese Head of State and two Chinese Prime Ministers,” he said.

Dwelling on the issues discussed during the working session, Minister Wang Yi said discussions dwelled on cooperation with the political angle featuring prominently. “We have to continue giving mutual support on issues touching on the interests of one another. We also explored ways to new domains and modalities for cooperation,” he said.

The issue of terrorism threatening Cameroon’s peace and security was also discussed. Minister Moukoko Mbonjo edified his Chinese counterpart on the security challenges currently facing Cameroon. The Chinese Minister expressed China’s sympathy and understanding because China, Minister Wang Yi said, is also facing terrorist threats.

In that vein, he emphasised that the fight against terrorism is a duty to all members of the international community. “We will continue working together to improve on peace and security. As you know, without peace and security there is no development,” he said. Education and youth employment were proffered as means to nip terrorism in the bud.
