National Gender Policy Now Available

Under the auspices of the Prime Minister, the Minister of Women’s Empowerment and the Family, officially presented the document on January 23, 2015 in Yaounde.

Government action in the area of promotion of gender equality and equity will henceforth be guided by an orientation and reference document - the National Gender Policy of Cameroon. It was officially presented by the Minister of Women’s Empowerment and the Family, Marie Therese Abena Ondoua, personal representative of the Prime Minister and Head of Government, on Friday, January 23, 2015 in Yaounde.

In the presence of several cabinet Ministers including those of Youth Affairs, Vocational Training, Basic Education, Water Resources and Energy, as well as Cameroon’s development partners, amongst others, minister Abena Ondoua said the document fell within the framework of President Paul Biya’s resolve to enable women become development actors, citizens in their own right and beneficiaries of his Emergence Policy.

The National Gender Policy of Cameroon was adopted in 2014 against a backdrop of efforts to strengthen the efficiency of the national institutional mechanism for the promotion of the equality of sexes which had become a development imperative and governance requirement. It was drawn up using a participatory approach with the input of all ministries and support of development partners, particularly the United Nations System in Cameroon.

It comprises four parts, including a situation analysis which identified pending issues such as the low level of education of girls, discriminations and violence against women, high maternal mortality rate, low economic power for women and the insufficient participation of women in public life and decision-making as well as the low level of impact and visibility of women and gender promotion policies.

The document also proposes solutions in the form of strategic axes which include the promotion of equal and equitable access for girls and boys, men and women to education, training and information as well as the strengthening of the institutional framework for the promotion of gender.

To Minister Marie Therese Abena Ondoua, the National Gender Policy outlines political intentions.  “It is thus our collective duty to transform these intentions into concrete reality and palpable actions,” she said, disclosing that government will soon publish a multisectorial plan of action to describe in detail all programmes, actions and activities which different sectors will implement to attain the objectives of the policy presented.

On her part, the representative of the Coordinator of the UN System in Cameroon and Country Director of UN-Women, Anne Marie Rachelle Mian, rejoiced that Cameroon now counts amongst countries with a national gender policy and reiterated the availability of the UN System to accompany the State of Cameroon in the implementation of the policy.
