OHADA Ministers Meeting: Experts Prepare Ground

Ahead of the ministers meeting scheduled for 29-30 January 2015, experts began meeting yesterday 26 January 2015.

Experts of the Organization for the Harmonization of Business Law in Africa, known by its French acronym OHADA, are currently meeting in Yaounde in prelude to the 37th meeting of Council of Ministers of OHADA billed for 29 and 30 January 2015, in Yaounde.  The meeting was formally declared open by the Secretary General in the Ministry of Justice, George Gwanmesia.

As experts, he noted, they will for three days (26-28 January 2015) discuss issues that concern the functioning of the institution and its activities. On this score, he exhorted the experts from all the 17 member countries to make worthy proposals that will facilitate deliberations of the Council of Ministers, taking into cognizance the financial crisis faced by the organization.

According to the Focal Point of the organizing committee, Gaston Kenfack Douajni, who also doubles as the Director of Legislation in the Ministry of Justice, the expert meeting is essentially on the 2015 budget of the organization and the enactment of a new regulation concerning the staff situation. The experts will also examine the financial situation of the organization, especially on how to boost contributions by member countries.

According to the Permanent Secretary of the organization, Prof. Dorothé C. Sossa, OHADA’s 22 years of existence has greatly improved the business climate in member countries. He said the organization adopted two laws in 2014 and is working on two others to be adopted this year, notably on accountability and subventions.

The President of the OHADA National Commission of Côte d’Ivoire Toto Noeltold Cameroon Tribune that the organization is waxing strong ever since the civil crisis ended. Various commissions, he added, have been created to formulate blueprint reforms that will boost the business climate in Côte d’Ivoire.

It should be recalled that Cameroon’s Minister Delegate to the Minister of Justice, Jean-Pierre Fogui, was elected in early 2014 as the Chairman of the Council of Ministers of OHADA.
