CAR Demonstrations Hamper Forum Preparations

The protests blocking teams in the field are most in the Seleka-controlled North.

After the appointment of members whose mission is to prepare the national reconciliation forum in the Central African Republic, teams have been dispatched to the field to carry out broad-based consultations ahead of the forum that will take place in February 2015.

While the team members have been working hitch-free in the western part of the country, things are however complicated in the north controlled by the ex-Seleka armed rebel movement. RFI reported that demonstrations greeted the team’s arrival in Bambari recently as road blocks were mounted to stop the consultation facilitators from the capital Bangui from doing their work.

The team members were reportedly blocked on the Ouaka bridge as another demonstration cropped up. RFI however reported that calm reigns in the western part of the country. Frédéric Ouagonda, Senior Divisional Officer of Bouar, RFI said, expressed enthusiasm with the ongoing pre-forum consultations as he disclosed that with the resident Minister, Victor Waké, they were to visit the haussa quarter and other areas such as Baoro.

The ex-Seleka rebel movement has continued to create panic and insecurity in the north of the Central African Republic as its fighters on Sunday, January 25, 2015 kidnapped the Senior Divisional Officer of Kaga-Bandoro and other members of the official delegation from Bangui that notably included the body guards of the Ministers of Planning and Tourism. The abducted people were only handed over to the UN Mission (MINUSCA) the following day.

The two Ministers were supposed to lead an official mission in the area. The high wave of kidnappings that also included that of the Minister of Youth and Sports, Armel Ningatoloum Sayo, French humanitarian worker, Claudia Priest and a UN worker have contributed to  worsen  the state of the insecurity in the country.
