Bomb Explodes After President Leaves Rally

The incident in which one person died occurred in Gombe city in north-eastern Nigeria.

A car bomb went off near a stadium in the north-eastern Nigerian city of Gombe on Monday, February 2, 2015 a few minutes after President Goodluck Jonathan left a party rally there, Reuters reported.

The bomb reportedly exploded about 200 metres from the stadium, engulfing the car in flames. BBC while citing Police and hospital sources said that besides the one person who died, 18 other people were wounded. Gombe Police spokesman, Fwaje Atajiri is said to have declared that the female bomber blew herself up near a car.  He specified that a female passerby had been killed, contradicting earlier reports that three people had been killed in the blast.

Although there was no immediate claim of responsibility, suspicion is likely to fall on terrorist group Boko Haram, which has attacked Gombe several times. On February 1, 2015, for instance, a suicide bombing near a mosque in the market area in Gombe killed five people and wounded eight.

Incumbent President Goodluck Jonathan, candidate of the ruling People’s Democratic Party (PDP) is campaigning for re-election in the February 14, 2015 presidential election that pits him against the major challenger opposition Muhammadu Buhari of the All Progressives Congress (APC). BBC quoted Mohammed Bolari who was present at the Gombe rally as saying that, “The president had just passed the parking lot and we were trailing behind his convoy when the explosion happened.” Considering the blast last Sunday, the city of Gombe was reportedly lockdown with security operatives restricting the movement of people in most areas. Residents are said to have set up check points to defend Gombe.  Local media reports say yesterday’s bomb blast led to unrest in Gombe, with angry youths attacking supporters of President Jonathan's People's Democratic Party (PDP). The youths reportedly shouted and denounced the visit which they blame for the attack.
