Douala: City Council Evaluates Construction Sites

The rehabilitation of some roads in the Douala I and III council areas are near completion.

Some roads in the economic capital are being given facelift to improve circulation and reduce accident risks. The government Delegate to the Douala City Council, Dr. Fritz Ntone Ntone and crew went visiting the sites to evaluate the state of advancement, the quality of work and as well propose solutions to the difficulties technicians are faced with. The first stop took the delegation to four roads under rehabilitation in Bonapriso, namely Michel Brunet, King Bell, Douala Manga Bell and the Richard Bell roads. The rehabilitation works that stands at 58 per cent completion will cost some FCFA 1.190 billion upon completion. The visiting of construction sites coupled with the fight against urban disorder with muscular and furious Municipal Police destroying any attachment less than three metres from the road. They brought down fences, destroyed barbecue fireplaces, chopped call box kiosks and seized goods displayed at the middle of the road.

At the second stop in Akwa, the Government Delegate evaluated eight roads under rehabilitation including the Alfred Saker, Foch, Lehman and Prince de Galles roads. The roads that will cost some FCFA 1.536 billion is at 20 per cent realisation. Given that part of the roads in the area are occupied by second-hand car dealers, who were given till early January 2015 to evacuate, Dr. Fritz Ntone Ntone gave them 48 hours to remove the vehicles which failure will lead to impoundment. Reacting to orders, the Municipal Police with the aid of red paint marked a mighty cross, AV and CUD on each car.

The third stop took the heavily guided team to the New Deido Market where the “Trois Morts” entrance is still being graded and gutters under construction. With five other roads including the Kotto road, the FCFA 2.068 billion worth project is just 8 per cent physical realisation. At the end of the visit, the Government Delegate expressed satisfaction and enjoined project holders to use quality material.
