Cameroon-Turkey Revisiting Defense Agreement

The Secretary of State in charge of the National Gendarmerie yesterday provided explanations to the Defence and Security Committee.

 

Members of the Defence and Security Committee of the National Assembly yesterday March 30, 2015, scrutinised the draft bill to authorise the President of the Republic to ratify the cooperation agreement in the field of Security signed between the Government of the Republic of Cameroon and the Government of the Republic of Turkey in Ankara, Turkey, on June 19, 2014. On hand to explain the merits of the bill was the Secretary of State in the Ministry of Defence in charge of the National Gendarmerie, Jean Baptist Bokam, accompanied by the Vice Prime Minister, Minister Delegate at the Presidency in charge of the Relation with the Assemblies, Amadou Ali and the Minister of External Relations, Pierre Moukoko Mbonjo.

The Committee meeting which held behind closed-door, chaired by its President, Hon. Sali Diarou, sought to get succinct details of the bill. According to the explanatory statement, the bill, will establish operational and technical security cooperation between Cameroon and Turkey. The implementation of the accord, according to the government, will help build operational and technical capacity of the security forces as well as provide specialised training for security personnel in the fight against crime and terrorism. At a time of increasing terrorism, multifaceted international alliances will benefit Cameroon, which is currently waging a war against Boko Haram sect.
