UN Condemns Boko Haram Attacks

In a press briefing last Friday in Yaounde, Communication Minister highlighted the resolution passed by the UN Human Rights Council against the extremist sect.

Cameroon’s Minister of Communication and government spokesperson, Issa Tchiroma Bakary has qualified the UN Human Rights Council resolution condemning the atrocities of the Boko Haram attacks on Cameroon as well as other affected countries as a “diplomatic victory our country has recorded.” Mr. Tchiroma was addressing national and international press in Yaounde last Friday April 10, in a press briefing that aimed at throwing more light on the resolution passed by the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva during its 23rd Special Session on April 1, 2015, as requested by the African Group led by the People’s Republic of Algeria.

The Minister of Communication stated that the Council lauded the efforts made by the governments of Nigeria, Cameroon, Chad and Benin to respond to such barbaric acts of terrorism, while also commending the leading role played by African Union and sub-regional organisations such as ECCAS, ECOWAS and the Lake Chad Basin Commission to address the threats posed by the insurgents.

The Geneva meeting which was also attended by Cameroon’s External Relations Minister, Pierre Moukoko Mbonjo, he recalled, condemned in strongest terms the gross abuses of international human rights law and the international humanitarian law perpetrated by Boko Haram, and called on those funding the barbaric group to immediately desist from giving such support which is contrary to international law as well as resolutions and decision adopted by the UN General Assembly, the African Union, ECCAS, ECOWAS and LCBC. The members of the UN Human Rights Council were more disturbed by the atrocities perpetrated by Boko Haram with at least 15,000 victims since 2009, abducting countless children and women as well as forceful recruitment of children fighters.

Meanwhile, Minister Issa Tchiroma restated the appeal of the Council, for a more active and multifaceted international support to Cameroon, Chad, Niger and Nigeria and a multilateral technical assistance to the Multinational Joint Task Force.

During the 23rd Special Session of the UN Human Rights Council meeting, Minister Tchiroma highlighted, Cameroon’s Minister of External Relations, Pierre Moukoko, revealed that the border area affected by the Boko Haram actions extends over 400 km, adding that the highly professional Cameroonian forces defended on their own the entire territorial integrity of Cameroon in the affected region without losing an inch of its territory to Boko Haram. Moukoko Mbonjo underlined during the Geneva conclave that thousands of Boko Haram captives in Cameroon enjoy all their rights adding that it represents a significant unplanned burden on the State budget.
