Preparations Intensify For 2015 Women’s Afro-basket Tournament

The second preparatory meeting took place on Tuesday followed by a press briefing granted by the federation president.

Cameroon is stepping up preparations towards hosting the 2015 edition of the women Africa cup of nations in basketball christened Afro-basket. The second preparatory meeting towards the event took place on Tuesday, presided by the minister of Sports and Physical Education, Adoum Garoua. It came out from that meeting measures had been put in place to ensure the transportation, lodging and feeding of the different delegations that will be visiting the country. On the sporting side, Minister Adoum Garoua exceptionally granted a three-month training camp for the basketball Lionesses to optimize the chances of Cameroon hosting and winning the competition.

In a press conference after the preparatory meeting, the president of the basketball federation, Samuel Nduku presented a consignment of equipment offered by the International basketball federation, FIBA. The equipment consists essentially of dismountable plastic carpets enough t cover half of a basketball court used to play basketball with three players against three. The equipment comes to add to 700 balls earlier offered by FIBA which were distributed to clubs. Nduku said the federation will receive an additional 200 balls during the draws for the tournament which will be conducted at the Yaounde Conference centre on May 9th.

The draws will be made for the African games and men’s afro-basket also as the draws earlier made in Tunisia will have to be completed in Yaounde with eight countries vying for three places. The afro-basket competition will take place on June15th at the Yaounde Sports complex. It is the first time that Cameroon will be hosting the competition since its inception about fifty years ago. Eight countries have so far qualified for the competition namely; Gabon, Uganda, Angola, Mali, Senegal, Cote d’Ivoire, South Africa and obviously host Cameroon.
