Revision of Voters’ List:ELECAM Local Branches Multiply Field Visits

As the deadline of August 31, draws near, Council branches are revising strategies to get more names on the electoral register.

Officials of Elections Cameroon (ELECAM) in the Council branches are revising strategies to get more names registered on the electoral list before August 31, 2015, deadline set by the law for the closing of voters registers each year. Council branch officials in Yaounde are multiplying field visits to different neighbourhoods within their area of jurisdiction in a bid to boost the revision exercise.

At the Yaounde VI Council Branch office yesterday May 4, 2015, CT met the staff in a strategic meeting which the Council Branch Head, Aboubakar Garba said was aimed at devising new ways of giving the exercise new impetus. He said about 600 new cases have been registered on the electoral list since the exercised kicked off in January 2, 2015 in his council area. Aboubakar added that apart from voter registration, modification and deletion which constitute the revision exercise, the branch also distributes voters’ cards to their owners. “772 out of about 2,000 cards received have already been distributed”, he stated. Over 30 cases of transfer and 20 deletions of dead names have also been recorded.

The Yaounde VI Council Branch Head stated that a weekly plan of action on the visit to the major roundabouts of the sub division has been outlined alongside a communication strategy to get people especially youths who have attained voting age to come on-board.  For this week, his support staff will be positioned at the Handicap centre Etoug-Ebe and Mendong neighbourhoods for proximity revision exercise.

The situation is not very different at the Yaounde III Council area where the Branch Head, Mvondo Sylvestre Desire told CT that his staff is constantly in the field. By the time CT visited the Council branch office, the support staff were already in the field including the Council Branch Head. However, reports from the branch offices indicate that the population especially the youths are still lacklustre to register on the voters’ list.
