Togo: Gnassingbé Begins Challenging Third Term

After re-election in the April 25, 2015 presidential poll, he was sworn-in on May 4, 2015.

President Faure Essozimna Gnassingbé of Togo during his inaugural speech on May 4, 2015 acknowledged the challenging task inherent  in his third term of office when he called on the citizens to keep aside political differences, unite and face the  challenge of building a modern and prosperous  country that is reconciled with itself and respected by the rest of the world, Le Temps reported. After the Constitutional Court on May 3, 2015 proclaimed him winner of the April 25, 2015 presidential poll in which four other opposition candidates contested, Faure Gnassingbé officially took the oath of office on Monday, thereby starting his third term of office as Head of State of Togo.

The call for unity by President Faure Gnassingbé for the most part stems from the continuous rejection of the election results by his main challenger, Jean-Pierre Fabre of the National Alliance for Change (ANC).  Statistics on the election results indicate that Faure Gnassingbé won with 58.77 per cent of the votes cast. Jean-Pierre Fabre his main challenger scored 35.19 per cent of the votes cast.  For the other candidates, Aimé Gogué  scored  4.03 per cent,  Gerry Taama 1.04 per cent   and  Mouhamed Tchassona Traoré came last with 0.94 per cent of the votes cast. Despite the official results, Jean-Pierre Fabre is not yet convinced, testified by the fact that on Friday, May 1, 2015, he presented in his Lomé campaign headquarters what he termed results tallied from polling stations results sheets. Faure Gnassingbé’s second term of office  that started  in 2010 was highly contested as the post-election period was marked by protests.
