University Governance: Stakeholders Discuss Measures To Strengthen Process

A four-day forum organised by the Ministry of Higher Education and partners opened in Yaounde on May 11, 2015.

In order to continue to ensure quality university education for students, government is exploring ways and means of improving governance and ensuring the development of infrastructure. Speaking at the Yaounde National Advanced School of Engineering yesterday, May 11, 2015, while opening a national forum on university governance and development, the Minister of Higher Education, Prof. Jacques Fame Ndongo, said government has been improving the sector over the years.

This, he noted, has been in terms of facilities, teaching, research and administration. Prof. Fame Ndongo, who is also Vice President of the National UNESCO Commission, cited President Paul Biya as insisting that university education must meet the needs of ordinary people. Also speaking at the event, Dr Seydou Cissé, representing the Islamic Organisation for Education, Science and Culture, ISESCO, said governance reviews objectives and plans for better performance by students. He called for universities to become avenues of development of new innovative ideas.

Organised by the Ministry of Higher Education, National UNESCO Commission and the Islamic Organisation for Education, Science and Culture, the four-day gathering aims at giving impetus to university governance and development in terms of funding, quality learning, infrastructure and professionalisation. Participants include the Rectors of the Universities of Yaounde I and II, and representatives of the other State universities of Buea, Bamenda, Dschang, Douala, Ngaoundere and Maroua. Owners of private universities and higher institutes are also taking part.
