Soboum, Douala Fire Kills Three

Victims’ mother who sustained a third degree burn is receiving treatment in the hospital.

Three children of a parent have perished in a ravaging fire incident that broke out at about 1 a.m on Sunday, May 24, 2015 near “Carrefour Combi” at the Soboum quarter in the Douala III Subdivision. Their mother, Makeu Hortense, who is reported to have received third degree burns, was immediately rushed to a local health establishment for medical attention.

It is not clear how the 39-year-old woman partially survived the disaster. However, security sources hold that the eldest of the victims, 16-year-old Foyen Kuetche was on the bed while 10-year-old Sandra Ngwe and two-year-old Ralph were almost beside the main door of the wooden apartment. From all indications, the children’s mother who sustained third degree burns struggled to safe the two-year-old to no avail.

A police security chief, Assoa Assoa Martien, who sustained an injury in the heat at the scene of the fire incident, said the cause of the fire is yet to be detected adding that a gas bottle without tube was found outside the apartment.

The intervention of the Fire Fighting Brigade could only stop the fire from crossing to other plank houses that surrounded the affected house. The corpses have been taken to the Laquintinie Hospital Mortuary while the Judicial Police have opened investigation. It is worth remembering that the incident is coming just barely a day after a 62-year-old woman died in a similar disaster at the Agip junction,
