The newly-elected President of the Pan-African Parliament was received in audience yesterday by Niat Njifenji.

The Pan-African Parliament’s newly-elected President, Cameroonian-born Roger Nkodo Dang, yesterday, June 4, 2015 in Yaounde, expressed his gratitude to the President of the Senate, Marcel Niat Njifenji, for the support given to his candidature until victory was obtained during elections last May  27, 2015 in Midrand, Republic of South Africa.

After meeting the visibly happy Senate President for over an hour, Hon. Roger Nkodo Dang, an MP from the Nyong and Mfoumou Division in the Centre Region, disclosed to the press that the team from the Senate played a crucial role, especially when his candidature was contested by other candidates. “The Senate worked in the corridors and its role was essential in Midrand, South Africa,” he stated. He said his courtesy call on Niat Njifenji like the one  the previous day on the National Assembly President, Cavaye Yeguie Djibril, was also to enlist further support from both Houses of Parliament in Cameroon to help popularise the African Union. Given his place at the head of the institution, Hon. Nkodo Dang said Cameroon must now become the centre of the Pan-African institution. Debates on issues related to the latter must be present during sessions of both houses so that Cameroonians should know more about the parliament, its activities, especially as it is in a transitory period between a consultative organ and a legislative body.

Based in Midrand, South Africa, the Pan-African Parliament was established in March 2004, by Article 17 of the Constitutive Act of the African Union, as one of the nine organs provided for in the treaty establishing the African Economic Community signed in Abuja, Nigeria, in 1991. The Pan-African Parliament parliamentarians represent all the peoples of Africa.
