Nigeria: Suicide Attack Hits Maiduguri

At least 20 people died on Monday June 22 bomb blasts and 50 others wounded.

The north eastern Nigerian city of Maiduguri, capital of Borno State has been a theatre of suicide bombings this June 2015 with the latest case being two bomb blasts on Monday, June 22, 2015 that killed at least 20 people and injured 50 others, media reports say. Inquirer net disclosed that Monday’s suicide attacks were the fourth in Maiduguri in June 2015.

Reports say in the first deadly attack last Monday, a young female suicide bomber of about 17 years old detonated her explosives at a bus station, near a fish market in the Baga Road area of Maiduguri. "We heard a loud explosion at about 3:50 p.m. (1450 GMT) while we were preparing for afternoon prayers," Media reports quoted Danlami Ajaokuta, a civilian vigilante assisting the military against Boko Haram as saying. He further added, "It happened right inside the motor park (bus station) attached to the fish market where labourers were sorting out rice."

Inquirer net cited a fishmonger Idi Idrisa as saying that one teenager exploded as she approached the mosque crowded with people from the nearby Baga Road fish market, performing afternoon prayers during the holy month of Ramadan. The second teen appeared to run away and blew up further away, killing only herself, he reportedly said. Civilian defense fighter Sama Ila Abu said he counted at least 30 corpses as he helped collect the dead, Inquirer reported.

Borno State Police Commissioner Aderemi Opadokun on his part, was quoted as having told reporters that, "Twelve people died including the bombers and many others injured." On June 3, 2015 an improvised explosive device left outside a mechanics' workshop on the Baga Road killed 18 people, while on May 30, 26 people were killed in a suicide attack at a city mosque.

No group immediately claimed responsibility for the attack but there are accusing fingers pointing at the terrorist group Boko Haram that is reputed for attacks, suicide bombings and kidnappings in the area.
