Voter Registration: Women Show Little Enthusiasm

Recent statistics from Elections Cameroon indicate that female Cameroonians are the least interested.

Officials of the elections management body, Elections Cameroon, ELECAM, are increasingly voicing their worry publicly over the little enthusiasm shown by women in the voters’ rolls revision process that started on January 2, 2015 and ends on August 31, 2015.

The latest to express his worry on June 23, 2015 in Yaounde was the President of ELECAM’s Electoral Board, Dr Samuel Fonkam Azu’u. This was during the Board’s first ordinary session for 2015. While hailing youths for registering massively, he could not understand why women were showing less interest as evidenced by figures from field staff.

In effect, the Director General of ELECAM, Mohaman Sani Tanimou, in an interview with Cameroon Tribune on May 15, 2015, disclosed that statistics from voters’ rolls on December 31, 2014, showed a total number of 5,381,663 registered voters. Some 2,910,047 were male while 2,671,506 were female voters. As at May 2015, there were 99,446 newly registered voters of whom 60,858 were male while only 38,608 were female. Out of this figure, 72,513 youths aged between 20 and 35 years included 44,345 young men and only 28,168 young women.

With two months to the end of the exercise, ELECAM officials say they are employing efficient strategies to attract more women into the voter registration process.
