Airport Dose of the State Visit

All the arrangements at the Yaounde Nsimalen Airport yesterday ably translated the magnitude of the visit of the French leader to Cameroon.

From every indication, ceremonies at the Presidential section of the Yaounde Nsimalen International Airport told the story even better as to the nature of the visit to Cameroon, by the French President, Francois Hollande. The mounting of the military honours, the honouring of the flags of the two nations, by the two Heads of State, the singing of the Anthems of both countries and the shooting of the 21 gun salute, all combined to give the solemnity a State visit deserves.

This mobilisation couldn’t have been otherwise considering that a State visit is a formal visit by a head of State to a foreign country at the invitation of that country’s head of State with the latter also acting as the official host for the duration of the visit. State visits it should be recalled are considered to be the highest expression of friendly bilateral relations between two sovereign States and are in general characterised by emphasis on official public ceremonies.

The paraphernalia at Nsimalen yesterday both on arrival and departure was an absolute translation of the description above. The two ceremonies organised to grace the arrival and departure of the August visitor bore a lot of egos of nationhood, epitomised by military honours and the massive presence of the national and international constituted corps. Animated by the Presidential band on arrival, the airport ceremonies witnessed the participation of a battery of pressmen, numerous dance groups, notably from the Mfoundi and Mefou Afamba Divisions, and a medley of political party militants dominated by those of the Cameroon People’s Democratic Movement (CPDM).

Everything took place in strict respect of official protocol. The ball was set rolling immediately as the plane transporting the French President taxied to a halt at the tar mark of the Presidential section of the airport. On hand at the foot of the plane to welcome him was, President Biya who had as official delegation; the Minister of External Relations, Pierre Moukoko Mbonjo; Minister Secretary General at the Presidency of the Republic, Ferdinand Ngoh Ngoh; Director of Civil Cabinet, Martin Belinga Eboutou; Minister of the Economy, Planning and Regional Development, Emmanuel  Nganou Djoumessi; Minister of Communication, Issa Tchiroma Bakary; Minister in Charge of Special Duties at the Presidency, Paul Atanga Nji; Rear-Admiral and Special Adviser at the Presidency, Joseph Fouda;  Cameroon’s Ambassador in France, Lejeune Mbella Mbella and Head of the State Protocol, Simon Pierre Bikele. Also present at the airport were members of government, Roving Ambassadors, members of the Diplomatic Corps, Governor of the Centre Region, and Senior Divisional Officers of the Mfoundi and Mefou Afamba among others.

The ceremony that marked the departure of President Hollande took place later in the night ending at 12:37 AM. President Paul Biya who arrived at the Presidential Lounge about 25 minutes earlier to wait for his arrival from the Residence de la France where he had gone to commune with his countrymen, personally saw the French leader off into his plane and waited till it completely took off and completely disappeared into the night clouds.
