Buhari Calls For Faster Deployment of Regional Force

President Muhammadu Buhari made the call last weekend after more than 200 people died in a wave of Boko Haram attacks.

Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari has called for a faster deployment of the regional force to fight Boko Haram militants who have multiplied attacks on civilians in north eastern Nigeria. More than 200 people died during the latest wave of Boko Haram attacks late last week.

President Buhari in a statement on Friday, July 3, 2015 described as a "heinous atrocity" the latest wave of attacks by Boko Haram militants, BBC reported. He further said the attacks were "inhuman and barbaric," and declared that they were "the last desperate acts of fleeing agents of terrorism."  The gunmen and suicide bombers have been launching attacks on remote villages in the north-eastern Borno State since last Tuesday, targeting people attending evening prayers.

The assaults began on Tuesday, June 30, 2015 when the militants shot dead 48 men after they had finished prayers in two villages near the town of Monguno, a resident is said to have told BBC. “They were praying in the mosque when Boko Haram attackers descended on the village. They waited till they finished the prayers. They gathered them in one place, separated men from women and opened fire on them," he said. On Wednesday, more than 50 gunmen killed 97 people in the village of Kukawa, near Lake Chad, eyewitness Babami Alhaji Kolo  reportedly told the news agencies.

"The terrorists first descended on Muslim worshippers in various mosques who were observing the Maghrib prayer shortly after breaking their fast [for the Muslim month of Ramadan]," he is quoted as having said. On Thursday, two female suicide bombers blew themselves up in another Borno village, police said. Early Friday, July 3, 2015 morning, as people were sleeping, Boko Haram militants dragged men out of houses in Miringa village and shot them for escaping forced conscription. They "picked 13 men from selected homes and took them to the Eid prayer ground outside the village where they opened fire on them," resident Baballe Mohammed said, adding 11 died and two managed to escape.

Yesterday, July 5, 2015 suspected Boko Haram militants attacked the Redeemed Christian Church of God on the outskirts of Potiskum in Yobe State killing at least five people.
