Livestock: Ground-breaking Chain Of Projects

The construction of slaughter houses, refrigerated warehouses and acquisition of refrigerated transportation vans are on course to the tune of FCFA 10 billion.

The livestock sector is one of those that would benefit a great deal in the three-year emergency development plan announced by the Head of State late last year. The sector is thus being modernised with the construction of slaughter houses in major production zones, refrigerated warehouses in high consumption centres and the acquisition of refrigerated transportation vans to the tune of about FCFA 10 billion are pegged within the framework of the implementation of the triennial emergency plan aimed at accelerating growth.

The site to host the refrigerated warehouse at the Etoudi cattle market in Yaounde was visited by the Prime Minister, Head of Government, Philemon Yang yesterday July 8, 2015. The scheme according to the Project Coordinator, Yiwe Roger, will entail the construction and equipping of a 600 cubic metres refrigerated warehouse with a storage capacity of 10.000 carcasses of 200kg.

The warehouse according to the fact sheet will measure 42.67m in length, 35.65m width and a height of 7m. The refrigerated warehouse at the Etoudi neighbourhood shall contain four refrigerated compartments ranging between 0°C to -25° C. It shall also contain a cold tunnel of -30° C as well as an anti refrigerated chamber of +15°C for the preservation and storage of beef, pork and chicken.

Other components of the project includes a processing and equipment centre, a distribution hall, offices, toilets, store room for equipments and a lodging facility all enclosed  by a fence. Work on the Yaounde project site started on June 23, 2015, with the bulldozing and levelling of the site that covers a total surface area of 6,000m3. Work is expected to last 16 months.

It should be noted that similar projects though with different capacities shall be constructed in Ngoundere, Ebolowa and Kribi still within the framework of the three-year emergency development plan. All of this chain is intended to add value to livestock products and ensure hygiene and sanitation in the handling of the products before reaching the consumers.
