Over 30 people who inhaled the poisonous gas received medical care yesterday.

The premises of Union Camerounaise de Brasseries (UCB), in the Bassa industrial zone, was crowded with part of its 800 workers, filed with panic after a gas leakage caused the collapse of over 30 workers in a neighbouring company, SPN. According to UBC officials, the poisonous gas, ammonia, leaked early yesterday morning and was carried by wind to a nearby company that caused the collapse of over 30 workers after inhaling. The gas escape seriously affected just one worker in UCB and many others who came in contact with the gas were advised to bath and drink enough water in order to mitigate the effect. The gas escape caused more fear than harm since no live was lost and those ferried to the hospital responded positively to medical care.

After informing the Fire Fighting Brigade that came on time, the technical team checked all the nooks and corner of the gigantic company and detected the exact position of the gas leakage that was quickly taken care off. After observing the situation for over two hours, top ranking officials of the company instructed that investigations be carried out to confirm everything was alright. After crosschecking with the Fire Fighting Brigade, hierarchy assemble the worried workers and encouraged them to go back to work.

The premises of the neighbouring company that suffered the consequences of the leakage were deserted. To the General Manager of the neighbouring company, SPN, Hoballah Ibrahim, the staff were sent home on his instructions in order to avert the worst from happening. “They will only resume after the situation has been sufficiently taken care of. Eight of the 30 workers sent to the hospital are said to have been responding to treatment,” he added.
