Vanity Yong, a student of GHS Anyajua, died on August 6, 2015, after taking a toxic liquid.

Vanity Yong, 17, a student from Sowi village in Belo Subdivision, Boyo Division in the North Region, chose the ugly way to the world beyond when she reportedly consumed the toxic Gamaline chemical. She was prompted by the shame of failing the 2015 session of the Cameroon General Certificate of Education, GCE Ordinary Level examination for the second time. Vanity, who died at the Mbingo Baptist Hospital on August 6, 2015, was buried in her Sowi family compound the following day.

Japhet Mbah, the Principal of Government High School, GHS Anyajua, where Vanity was a student, told Cameroon Tribune that she was among 76 students who sat the 2015 GCE Ordinary Level examination in the institution. Unfortunately, the late student was among the 29 who failed. It is reported that soon after the examination results were published, Yong Vanity travelled to the South West Region where her father, Bobe Foin Mujung Jacob Yong, had gone in search of a means of livelihood. It is alleged that Jacob Yong rebuked the daughter for again failing the GCE examination.

On return to the village, Vanity decided to consume the killer acid, Gamaline. From the look of things, it was too late when she was rushed to the Mbingo Baptist Hospital. The Acting Divisional Officer of Belo Subdivision, Nicolas Nkongho Manchang, told Cameroon Tribune that the suicide was an embarrassment and could be considered a curse for the Yong family. Meanwhile, as at August 10, 2015, the GCE Board was yet to make available details of the examination to the school for Japhet Mbah to know if late Yong Vanity improved on the zero subject score she had in 2014.
