CAR Receives More International Development Assistance

The World Bank group International Development Association has mobilized about 20 million U.S. Dollars.

The World Bank has obtained funding from the International Development Association amounting to 20 million U.S. Dollars intended to provide temporary jobs to vulnerable people throughout the Central African Republic, except in the capital Bangui, news agency reports say.  The money will finance the government project called “LONDO”.

The project sets out to facilitate the putting in place of the country back on its socio-economic rails in order to consolidate peace. Reports say during the execution of the project, some 35,500 people will within 40 days carry out road maintenance work.  In specific terms, under the auspices of the Agency for the execution of works of public interest in the Central African Republic, (AGETIP-CAF), 71 local reconstruction teams made up of 500 workers each, will maintain about 10,000 km of national and rural roads that have been on deteriorating state.

For the project to be properly executed, local authorities will receive tools, equipment and technical assistance, reports say. Workers will also be given bicycles to enable them get to the various work sites. In another development,  the African Development Union has donated FCFA 50 million  in an attempt to back  the Red Cross’s work in the Central African Republic, especially in the displaced camps located in the Saint Joseph Mukassa church and the Central Mosque of Bangui.

Reports say at least 500 displaced people will benefit from the funding which was handed over on Wednesday, August 5, 2015 to the Red Cross by the AU representative in Bangui, Jean Marie Mokoko. The donation will enable the Red Cross to fight malaria and other diseases in both sites during the current rainy season. The AU funding should also allow the Central African Red Cross to conduct psychosocial activities together with the rehabilitation of two sites.
