Profile: Brigadier-Gen. Bouba Dobekreo, Astute War Master

A veritable warfront daring commander, he has been a terror to poachers, highway robbers and maritime pirates in past two decades.

One of Cameroon’s most reputed army warfront officers in the past two decades is about to take up his new duty post as Commander of the First Sector of the Multinational Joint Task Force (MJTF) put in place by member States of the Lake Chad Basin Commission to fight the terrorist group, Boko Haram, according to a release by Cameroon’s Defence Ministry on August 14, 2015. Prior to his designation on August 14, 2015, by the Head of State, Paul Biya, the Coordinator of the Rapid Intervention Battalion (BIR), Colonel Bouba Dobekreo was promoted a day before to the rank of Brigadier General, alongside four other officers.

Known to be soft-spoken, discreet but very efficient, Brigadier General Bouba Dobekreo, attains another milestone and challenge in a brilliant military career spent heading special combat forces. Before coordinating the dreaded BIR, he had occupied several command positions such as Second Commander of the Third Battalion of the BIR in 2004, Commander of the Second Battalion of the BIR in 2005 and Commander of the 62nd Motorised Infantry Battalion in 2009.

Fighting Boko Haram from his new command post in Mora in the Far North Region will not be a strange task to Brigadier General Bouba Dobekreo who had successfully led several army operations such as Operation ALPHA in the Far North Region and Operation DELTA in Bakassi. Other successful missions to his credit were operations against poachers in the Mayo Rey Division of the North Region as well as the ruthless fight against highway robbers in the three northern regions and in the East Region.

Born on February 14, 1958 in Dschang (West Region), Brigadier General Bouba Dobekreo is married and father of five. After primary education in Garoua and secondary school in the cities of Douala, Garoua and Yaounde, he was admitted into the Faculty of Law and Economics Sciences in the University of Yaounde before he joined the Combined Military Academy (EMIA) in Yaounde in 1983.
