Higher Education: Ethics, Spirituality As Prerequisite For Career Success

The Catholic University Institute of Buea sensitised the public in Yaounde on August 19, 2015.

The Ministry of Higher Education has embarked on the professionalisation of education to enable graduates get jobs, but the drive to obtain certificates at all cost seems to be undermining the efforts of government.

Speaking at the Yaounde Djeuga Palace Hotel on August 19, 2015, the President of the Catholic University Institute of Buea, CUIB, Rev. Father George Nkeze, warned that without the inculcation of the notions of ethics and spirituality or the ‘relatedness’ of human beings, university graduates will continue to rush for Public Service jobs without any commitment to this source of livelihood. He said the tendency in the country is for people to do everything to enter professional schools, pass examinations and get employed without being able to create jobs for themselves or give something back to their communities.

Rev. Father Nkeze, who was speaking at a meeting with the corporate world, insisted on getting the right people in business organisations, adding that Cameroon’s Vision 2035 requires a paradigm shift in the higher education system by letting students have the right mindset.  “A culture that is founded on certificates is a recipe for disaster,” warned the President of the Catholic University Institute of Buea.

Wednesday’s evening get-together was an opportunity to sell CUIB that prides itself as an entrepreneurial university where students are treated as VIPs. Several students presented testimonies of their inventions, with officials insisting on discipline and passion for chosen courses as prerequisite for admission. Founded in 2010, the Catholic University Institute of Buea today offers Professional Degree and Higher National Diploma, HND courses in six schools. These are Business, Information Technology, Engineering, Agriculture and Natural Resources, Catholic Studies and Business and Technology.
