USA: Tightening Gun Control Advocated

The killing of two WDBJ7 television journalists in Virginia has heightened the advocacy.

There is a general outcry in the United States of America against the upsurge of violence and advocacy for tightened gun control as the number of deaths from wanton shootings keeps on increasing by the day. US President Barack Obama reportedly repeated his call for tougher gun laws after the shooting to dead of the journalist, Alison Parker and her cameraman Adam Ward by Vester Flanagan, on a live TV interview in the US State of Virginia on August 26, 2015.

"We're willing to spend trillions of dollars to prevent terrorist activities, but we haven't been willing so far at least to impose some common sense gun safety measures," BBC quoted Mr Obama as having said.  Reports say the White House on Wednesday said the attack showed the need for better gun control. The Republican presidential hopefuls Jim Gilmore and Ben Carson were not against the gun control but warned against any rush to introduce tougher gun controls.

"We're not going to let this madman take away the lawful rights of Americans to keep and bear arms. We're going to stand up for the second amendment," BBC quoted Jim Gilmore, a former Governor of Virginia as having told CNN. Nicholas Kristof in the New York Times handled the issue of tightening gun controls and is quoted as stating that, "Surely we can regulate guns as seriously as we do cars, ladders and swimming pools.”

Alison Parker and Adam Ward were both workers of the WDBJ7 television Station. Their murderer, Vester Flanagan was said to have been dismissed by the same station, WDBJ7, killed himself after a police chase following his macabre act. Station manager Jeff Marks said Flanagan was an "unhappy man" who had to be escorted from the WDBJ7 building after being dismissed in 2013. The interviewee, Vicki Gardner of the Smith Mountain Lake Regional Chamber of Commerce, is in a stable condition in hospital following surgery.
