Public Building Energy Use: Experts Advocate Efficiency

Representatives from government ministries, small and medium-size entreprises and the electricity sector are meeting in Yaounde.

The Ministry of Scientific Research and Innovation, through the National Committee for Technology Development, CNDT, has assembled experts in Yaounde to discuss how energy in public buildings can be used effectively to end waste. A two-day sensitisation workshop opened on September 1, 2015, with participants discussing best practices that can curb waste as the country seeks better ways of inclusive energy by 2035.

Experts at the meeting decried the inability by public service users to economise use of electricity. Instances were told of electrical appliances like computers and air conditioners running 7/7days alongside lighting systems. Such attitude, according to experts, not only plays down on the efficient flow and distribution of electricity, but scales up cost to the detriment of development. National figures are not readily available, but experts say the building sector in the world consumed 37 per cent of electricity. Cameroon is still looking forward to a national strategy for effective energy consumption in public buildings, CNDT notes. Complexities linked to risk management, lack of information, added value to buildings and financial costs for being the pioneer in the market, are to blame.

Notwithstanding, experts say cutting energy waste is possible. Public building users should first be sensitised to adopt cost-cutting measures such as turning off elecricical appliances when leaving offices, especially on weekends. The Head of the Department of Renewable Energy at the Sahel Institute of the University of Maroua, Dr Noël Djongyang, facilitator at the meeting, says it is high time Cameroonians, especially government officials, thought well before constructing. He explained that thermal comfort is possible and can cut cost once buildings are well tailored before construction. Incandescent lamp bulbs, it was said, consume electricity more than the innovative led lamp bulbs. Participants are expected at the end of the two-day get-together to master the niceties of environmentally energy-friendly buildings that cut electricity waste and cost.
