Central African Republic:Fears Raised As To Respect of Electoral Calendar

National Transition Council President says the calendar is not tenable and a group of political parties propose postponement of elections.

The electoral calendar in the Central African Republic states that a constitutional referendum will take place on October 4, 2015 to be followed two weeks later on October 18, 2015 by presidential and legislative elections. The National Transition Council which is the transition parliament has passed the draft constitution pending the final vote in the referendum; the Constitutional Council has on its part, spelt out conditions for eligibility, the number of electoral constituencies increased and registration of citizens of the Central African Republic abroad launched. All these show steps towards the respect of the electoral calendar towards the holding of elections that have been postponed two times.

Despite feverish preparations for the elections that are expected to end the transition process in the country, the President of the National Transition Council, Alexandré Ferdinand Nguendet has raised fears as to the strict respect of the electoral calendar and the feasibility of the elections. Mr Nguendet who remains skeptical while explaining why he thinks the respect of the electoral calendar was not possible, said, logically Electoral College had to be convened on August 18, 2015 but that was not done, RFI cited. Alexandre Ferdinand Nguendet said the National Transition Council remained skeptical with respect to the electoral calendar which its members described as not being realistic when it was voted. A platform of political parties and associations on their part, in a declaration on August 31, 2015, called for the postponement of the October 18 polls, Voice of America reported. The declaration raised the issue of failed enrollment of voters in the electoral registers outside the capital, Bangui and the persistent insecurity.
