Widikum, the border town with South West Region, was the focus of the 2015/2016 school reopening in the North West Region.

The 2015/2016 school year in the North West Region kicked off on Monday, September 7, 2015, on a satisfactory note as government, lay private and private schools opened their doors as early as 7:30am to welcome both old and new pupils and students. Security concerns were top on the agenda as Governor Adolphe Lele L’Afrique crisscrossed two divisions to ensure that all was going on well.

In Mezam Division, the Governor visited schools in Bamenda and Bali, while in Momo Division, he toured schools in Batibo and Widikum Subdivisions. In GBHS Bamenda, GBPS Bamenda, GTHS Bali, PS and PHS Batibo, as well as GBS Widikum and GHS Widikum, classes were going on effectively. Various Principals and Head Teachers were available to explain some of their problems that include insufficient classrooms and teachers. A pathetic case was that of GHS Widikum were the only access road to the institution is impassable, given recent rains. Governor Adolphe Lele L’Afrique rated the start of the new school year at 75 per cent, assuring that security will be heightened to ensure that everybody is safe.

The Divisional Delegates for Basic and Secondary Education for Momo, Tohsiichui Richard Ful and Forkum Roland Mbah respectively, said most of the schools lack accessible roads. They acknowledged that this has contributed to the low enrolment in the division. On the campuses of most schools visited, warning messages were found. Some of them read “Do not touch or take any abandoned luggage,” “Never accept to enter the vehicle of somebody you do not know,” “Do not take any parcel from someone you do not know,” amongst others.
