The medal won by Andegue Mbia Innocent takes Cameroon’s medal count to four.

After five days of competition, Cameroon on Tuesday won its first gold medal at the ongoing 11^th All African Games in Brazzaville. The medal was won for Cameroon by Andegue Mbia Innocent Yves in the karate kumite individual -84kg category.

Andegue came from behind a four point deficit to level scores at 4-4 each way urging the judges to decide in his favour as regulations stipulate that the athlete who covers up a deficit is given more consideration.

The other two medals were equally won in the karate discipline. Nonagm Boyomag Etienne Martial won bronze in the +84 category while team Cameroon won bronze in the team kata competition. This adds to the bronze medal already won by Sylvie Ambani on the second day of competitions on Tuesday in individual kata.

The competition is still in the qualifying stages in the team sports events.  In volleyball, the Lionesses are qualified for the quarter finals after recording three successive victories at the group stage, the latest being a 3-0 victory over Mozambique. Meanwhile, it has been a bumpy ride for their male counterparts who were beaten 1-3 by Algeria. The men will take on Rwanda in their second outing in the competition today while the women will take on Algeria. In basketball, Cameroon took on Congo yesterday walloping the host 98-28.

Meanwhile, Egypt is leading on the medal tally sheet with a total of 73 medals won so far; 26 gold, 26 silver and 21 bronze. They are followed by South Africa in the second position with 55 medals; 23 gold, 17 silver and 15 bronze.  Algeria is third with 42 medals; 14 gold, 15 silver and 13 gold. Cameroon occupies the 7^th position with three medals; one gold and two bronze.
