African Basketball Championship: Group B, Pool Of Death

The group comprises some of the most titled teams on the continent like Senegal and Angola.

Algeria

Algeria has participated seven times in the women’s African basketball championship dubbed Afrobasket. Their best performance was in 1968 when they attained the 4th position. They have occupied the 8th position three times and once 9th, 10th and 11th respectively. Their participation at the Yaounde Afrobasket will be eighth and their goal will be to go beyond the 4th position attained in 1968.

Nigeria

The female basketball squad of Nigeria known as the D’Tigers is not a formidable squad to reckon with on the continent. Though they appear on the top 50 of the world ranking, they have rose to the top of firmament in Africa only twice in 2003 and 2005 when they won gold. They also won bronze in 1997 and will be out to look for a third feather on their cap when they take part in the 2015 Afrobasket tournament in Yaounde.

Angola

Angola, the defending champion, is a regular participant at the final round of the Afrobasket championship with a record number of 15 participations. They have won gold twice in Maputo (2013) and Bamako and won the bronze medals five times; Antananarivo 2009, Johannesburg 1994, Dakar 2007, Maputo 1986 and Dakar 1981. Like Nigeria, they will be gunning for their third gold medal in Yaounde.

Senegal

Senegal is the most titled African side in basketball and have been winning medals in every edition. So far, they have won ten gold medals, six silver and three bronze. They are obviously the team to beat in the group but given their insatiable appetite for medals it will  be difficult to overcome the Senegalese hurdle.

Guinea

Guinea has just been a face in the crowd when it comes to basketball on the continent. They have been making sporadic appearances in the competition with nothing to write home about but for the silver medal which they won during the maiden edition of the tournament in 1966. They will be using the Yaounde tournament to try to stage a comeback on the continental scene.

Egypt

Egypt has also been a regular participant at the Afrobasket tournament right from the inception in 1966. There has been little success as Egypt has won the coveted trophy only twice in the history of the tournament; in 1966 and 1968. They have also won silver twice in 1970 and 1977 as well as bronze in 1974. They will be seeking for their third continental consecration in Yaounde.
