Burkina Faso Crisis: ECOWAS Sends Mediation Mission

The West African regional body has adopted plans of resolving the crisis in the country.

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) yesterday, September 22, 2015 in Abuja, Nigeria took far –reaching decisions intended to solve the crisis rocking Burkina Faso. A delegation of mediators comprising of the Presidents of Senegal, Nigeria and Benin were dispatched to the country to mediate between the coup plotters led by General Gilbert Diendere and the army led by Army Chief of  Staff, General Pingrenoma Zagre.

The Chairman of ECOWAS, Senegalese President, Macky Sall has called on the military junta in Burkina Faso to hand over power to the interim administration immediately while the country awaited the conduct of the upcoming  general election, This Day reported. ECOWAS has also called for the presidential election initially scheduled for October to be shifted to  November 2015. The army has also been called upon not to launch an assault on the presidential guard that carried out the coup  toppling the transition government headed by  President Michel Kafando.

While ECOWAS leaders met in Abuja, the presidential guard and army had consultations in the Burkina Faso capital, Ouagadougou. Tension remained high as the ultimatum given by the army to the coup plotters to surrender expired without the presidential guard bulging. Instead, the coup leader, General Diendere said they would defend themselves if attacked. General Diendere, BBC said, told the press that he will step aside once regional leaders endorse a peace plan, including a full amnesty for coup plotters, allowing candidates of former ruler Blaise Compaore to run for the presidency  as well as return to civilian  government.

Ouagadougou is surrounded by the army that was initially said to be ready to launch an assault on the presidential guards should they fail to surrender. Army Chief of Staff General Pingrenoma Zagre who is leading the army said, they however, wanted to avoid fighting, stating that it will be stupid to get to that level. He said they were continuing with negotiations and have to get to a situation where only the interest of the country will be preserved.
