Despite cited irregularities the opposition has vowed to oust incumbent Alpha Condé.
There is intense hustling and bustling in Guinea ahead of the presidential election of October 11, 2015 with the opposition stating that they will fully participate despite the noticed irregularities that may influence the sincerity of the polls. Incumbent President Alpha Condé, candidate of the Rally of the Guinean People will face seven other contenders, one of whom is Cellou Dalein Diallo, flag bearer of the main opposition party, Union of Democratic Forces of Guinea.
The Chinese News Agency (Xinhua) reported that seven opposition parties on Tuesday, October 5, 2015 demanded the postponement of the poll by a week in order to correct the dysfunctions in the electoral process. It cited Aliou Condé, Secretary General of the Union of the Democratic Forces of Guinea (UFDG) as saying that they are calling for the postponement of the election in order to ensure the correction of the maximum number of irregularities.
They argue that the electoral constituencies are illegal and would favour Alpha Condé’s party and also describe as anarchical, the issuing of voters cards by the National Independent Electoral Commission (CENI). The President of the electoral commission, Bakary Fofana, on his part is cited as saying that all conditions are favourable for the election to take place as programmed on Sunday, October 11.
Answering questions on whether the opposition would boycott the first round of the presidential poll, news agencies cited Aliou Condé as stating during a press conference in the capital, Conakry that they will not owing to the huge investments already made therein. He said what the opposition wanted was a free, transparent and credible poll whose results would be accepted by all. Reports say, six of the seven opposition candidates took part in the press conference. Mohamed Tall, an official of Sidya Touré’s party who is also candidate in the election, called on the CENI to take into account the magnitude of the difficulties.
