Guinea Conakry: Dialogue Encouraged To Diffuse Tension

The Independent National Electoral Commission is already verifying detailed results.

There is heightening anxiety and uncertainty in Guinea  with each  passing minute  as the country’s electoral body, the Independent National Electoral Commission  verify the detail results from Sunday, October 11, 2015 presidential election before their official proclamation.

RFI reported that tension continued to mount between supporters of incumbent President Alpha Condé and those of the seven opposition political parties who earlier last Monday, said they would reject the election results and called for the re-run of the poll  for glaring organizational lapses they believe were tailored to favour the outgoing President.

In order to pre-empt any post-electoral violence when the election results would finally be proclaimed, the Guinean authorities have embarked on dialogue and appeasement campaign. Five cabinet ministers reportedly gave a press conference in the capital, Conakry on October 14, 2015 attended by diplomats and representatives of international organizations.  Foreign Affairs Minister, Loucény Fall called, especially on the opposition candidates who are rejecting the polls to respect the law.

He enjoined the country’s partners to use every means at their disposal to call for calm and peace. Loucény Fall stated that actors with complaints were free to file petitions at the Constitutional Court. Justice Minister Check Sako who doubles as the Chairperson of the Dialogue Committee called on the eight candidates to dialogue. He said that he is opened to discuss any problems with them that could lead to post-electoral violence in order to preserve peace in the country.

The population of the capital city, Conakry has also been campaigning for dialogue and peace. RFI cited members of the populations to include the musician Oumar Touré, Abdoulaye Cissé who says “We cannot govern in the graveyard”,  and Miss Ketanbalo who says  the elections  is like examination  every candidate cannot succeed in at the same time. She said all the candidates must agree to avoid trouble.
