Detention of RFI Correspondant: Governement Clarifies

Listeners to news broadcasts over Radio France International (RFI) on Saturday morning of October 31, 2015, heard assurances given by Cameroon’s Communication Minister, Issa Tchiroma Bakary, that the French media’s Maroua-based Hausa language correspondent, Ahmed Abba who was arrested on July 30, 2015, is in good health and helping Cameroon’s security forces with investigation on activities of the terrorist group, Boko Haram. Issa Tchiroma’s reaction over RFI followed the latter’s recent complaints that as Ahmed Abba’s employer, it knew nothing of the whereabouts or state of health of its correspondent since he was arrested in Maroua during a routine identification check by security forces. Information from RFI’s website even says further that ever since Ahmed Abba was transferred to Yaounde after his arrest, all attempts by his family or RFI’s lawyer, Barrister Charles Tchoungang, to see him or take cognisance of the case file to know reasons for his detention, have proved futile. Speaking to Cameroon Tribune on Saturday, October 31, 2015, Issa Tchiroma Bakary explained why Ahmed Abba is still under detention and hinted that investigation is unravelling several networks presumably belonging to the dreaded Boko Haram.
