Violent Extremism: US, Cameroon Strengthen Partnership

Ambassador Michael Hoza and four US experts were received by the Minister of External Relations yesterday, November 4, 2015 in Yaounde.

Four security experts from the United States of America and the US Ambassador to Cameroon, His Excellency Michael Stephen Hoza, met yesterday, November 4, 2015 with the Minister of External Relations, Lejeune Mbella Mbella, to discuss ways of strengthening partnership in the global fight against violent extremism.

Speaking to the press after the 45-minute working session in the Minister’s cabinet, Ambassador Hoza said the discussions essentially dwelled on ensuring Cameroon’s border security. “We are proud to partner with Cameroon which has taken very strong steps to protect its people. Our discussions helped to advance the partnership to ensure the safety and security of the country,” he said.

The most recent feature of the existing partnership is the deployment of 300 American troops in Cameroon to assist with intelligence in the fight against Boko Haram. “I visited US troops in Garoua on November 3, 2015. The Garoua population gave a hilarious and warm welcome to the troops. Garoua women even dressed the only two female US soldiers in traditional regalia and they danced. It was a lifetime experience,” he explained.

On the heels of the US delegation, the Ambassador of Japan to Cameroon, H.E. Kunio Okamura came to review bilateral ties while the Ambassador of Switzerland to Cameroon, H.E. Claude Altermatt, also delivered a sealed message to the Minister of External Relations.
