Court Suspends Trade Union Congress

A Yaounde court on November 4, 2015 suspended the congress organised by Zambo Amougou.

The Confederation of Cameroon Trade Unions, CCTU, the umbrella body of certain labour unions in the country, on Wednesday, November 2015, held its fifth congress in Yaounde during which outgoing President, Zambo Amougou, was re-elected for another five-year term. However, the triumph of a successful election was dampened by a court ruling suspending the holding of the congress.

Dissident trade unionists, including members of the outgoing executive, had through an ex parte motion, sought to stop the holding of the congress. Mr. Justice Bias Joèl Albert of the Mfoundi Court of First Instance, Yaounde Administrative Centre, on November 4, 2015, issued an ex parte ruling, suspending the congress. Prior to last week’s union congress, there were already rifts in CCTU, with dissidents, mainly based in Douala, announcing on several occasions that they had suspended Zambo on account of alleged “gross disorder.”
