Paul Biya On The Frontline of UNESCO Forum of leaders

President Paul Biya and the First Lady Chantal Biya arrived Paris yesterday to participate in the forum of leaders of the 38th session of the General conference of UNESCO.

All is set at the UNESCO complex in Paris for the forum of Leaders of its 38th General Conference today. Among the scores of World leaders expected to be in attendance is President Paul Biya who arrived in Paris yesterday evening accompanied by First Lady and UNESCO’S Goodwill Ambassador, Chantal Biya. On hand to welcome the President and First Lady at the Orly airport was Jean Joseph Atangana, interim Chargé d’Affaire at the Cameroon Embassy in Paris and some French officials. Hundreds of Cameroonians thronged the airport to welcome the President and First Lady.  President Paul Biya who has been at the frontline of Africa’s support for UNESCO will be a main actor in today’s ceremony. Inside sources at UNESCO indicate that the Cameroon Head of State will be among the first World leaders to address the forum slated to begin this morning at ten o’clock. Other highlights of today’s activities include a bilateral meeting between UNESCO Director General, Irina Bokova and President Biya. After the tête-à-tête, the President will be treated to a guided tour of the hall of the Executive Council of UNESCO before attending a special reception later in the evening. Irina Bokova was re-elected for a second term as Director General of UNESCO in 2013. She has placed her activities under the banner of promoting a new humanism and implementing structural reforms to increase the effectiveness and visibility of the organization.

Added Significance

The Forum of leaders and the 70th anniversary of UNESCO have added dramatic significance to the ongoing 38th session of the General Conference of UNESCO. As an international platform for reflection and debate within the General Conference of UNESCO, the Forum of leaders strives to raise at the highest level, inspiration and guidance for future actions of the organization. In its third edition this year, the forum brings together Heads of State and government around a theme of strategic and interdisciplinary interest in order to propose innovative solutions to address the problems encountered in the implementation of programs in UNESCO’S areas of competence. In its 70th anniversary, UNESCO is witnessing a renewed vitality, thanks in part to the dynamism of its current Director General, Irina Bokova. The 70th anniversary celebrations began in October last year with a grand ceremony in memory of Nelson Mandela. Other special events organized by UNESCO as well as by member States have been taking place. The peak of the anniversary celebrations was last April in Paris that brought together the UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon and heads of all UN System agencies.

Fruitful Cooperation

In its 70th anniversary, UNESCO has established significant ties with Cameroon. The fruitful cooperation which began on November 11, 1960 when Cameroon became a member, is taking added weight as the years roll on. President Paul Biya visited UNESCO headquarters in Paris during the 34th session of the General Conference in October 2007. The visit greatly strengthened relations between Cameroon and UNESCO. The First Lady Chantal Biya’s appointment in November 2008 as UNESCO’S Goodwill Ambassador for education and social inclusion added more tonic to the relations between Cameroon and the Organisation. In practical terms, Cameroon honours all its financial obligations to UNESCO. In every domain of activity in the organization, there are cooperation ties with Cameroon. In Education, Natural Sciences, Social and Human Sciences, UNESCO remains a fruitful partner of Cameroon. In Communication, over twenty nine community radio stations were opened in Cameroon by UNESCO in its program for development of communication. At the level of management, Cameroun Chairs the Social and Human Science committee and is member of at least four other committees. The Micro-Science Centre in Yaounde is taking new sub-regional Status. In its 70th anniversary, the relationship between UNESCO and Cameroon is marked by serenity, intense cooperation and respect. The Forum of leaders of the 38th UNESCO General conference is holding against a background of terrorist attacks in Paris last Friday night that left at least one hundred and twenty nine people dead, three hundred and fifty two wounded. Three days of national mourning have been decreed with Paris in particular and France in general still to come to terms with the carnage. The presence of President Paul Biya and First Lady Chantal Biya in Paris at this painful moment is a strong message of support to France and an iron resolve for a global war against terror.
