Mbalmayo Gendarme Killings: Gendarmerie, Authorities Step up Investigations

Two gendarmes lost their lives on November 23, 2015, after one junior officer shot dead his colleague and later killed himself.

Administrative, gendarmerie and judicial authorities are working hard to unearth the possible reasons behind the recent horrible crime involving two gendarme Non-commissioned Officers in Mbalmayo, Nyong and So’o Division of the Centre Region. Sergeant Aimé-Valère Mbozo’o on Monday, November 23, 2015, shot dead his colleague, Staff Sergeant Christophe Nsangou, in the chest before killing himself with a shot in the head. The two were serving in the Mbalmayo Gendarmerie Territorial Post or ‘Brigade.’

According to the Senior Divisional Officer, SDO, for Nyong and So’o, Emmanuel Mariel Djikdent, several teams have since visited the town to investigate the incident. These include the State Counsel to Yaounde Military Tribunal and the Gendarmerie headquarters in Yaounde. Similarly, the administrative authorities are also investigating the matter. Following the deadly shoot-out on Monday at about 2 pm, the SDO ordered the withdrawal of all gendarmes in the town from checkpoints. Speaking on phone to Cameroon Tribune on November 25, 2015, Emmanuel Mariel Djikdent said though the measure was for 48 hours, there was the likelihood that he would prolong it. Consequently, only the police now man checkpoints in and around Mbalmayo.

The measure, SDO explained, is to boost morale among gendarmes before they return to highway duties. In this connection, the Gendarmerie Company Commander for Nyong and So’o and the Gendarmerie Legion Commander for the Centre Region are expected to address the troops to help raise their morale. Emmanuel Mariel Djikdent has already received families and tribesmen of the two dead gendarmes. He admitted that work at the Mbalmayo Gendarmerie Territorial ‘Brigade’ was virtually at a standstill as its officers respond to inquiries from different investigating teams.

Meanwhile, the corpses of late Sergeant Aimé-Valère Mbozo’o and Staff Sergeant Christophe Nsangou are under seal at the local mortuary until the investigations are concluded before the Gendarmerie High Command decides on the date of their burial. The Senior Divisional Officer for Nyong and So’o ruled out the possibility of Mbozo’o’s act being the result of a dispute over a girl friend. He said Aimé-Valère Mbozo’o had days before told people that they would soon hear of the damage caused by his gunshot.
