Downed Russian Plane: Moscow Announces Wide-ranging Sanctions

PM Dmitry Medvedev said the yet-to-be drafted measures could hit joint investment plans.

Russia is preparing wide-ranging economic sanctions against Turkey over the downing of one of its jets on the Turkey-Syria border, says Turkish Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev. He is quoted to has have said, “The measures would be drafted within days, and could hit joint investment plans.” Speaking at a televised cabinet meeting in Moscow, Mr Medvedev said, “The government has been instructed to work out a system of economic and humanitarian measures in reaction to this act of aggression.”

He said the focus would be on “the introduction of bans and restrictions with respect to the activities of Turkish economic structures on Russian territory” such as “shipments of goods including food” and “on works and services provided by Turkish companies.”

The same rules, Mr Medvedev said, may apply to a whole range of investment projects. “Cooperation on them with Turkey was determined by a high level of trust with that country,” he added. Meanwhile, Turkey has rejected Russian demands for an apology over its downing of a fighter jet on the Turkey-Syria border on Tuesday.

Russia also on Thursday advised its nationals against visiting Turkey, and urged those already there to return home “due to the terrorist threats that remain on Turkish territory.” The two countries have important economic links. Russia is Turkey’s second largest trading partner, while Turkey is the biggest foreign destination for Russian tourists. Russian President, Vladimir Putin, called the strike “a stab in the back” carried out by “accomplices of terror.”
