Cameroon’s Reunification: Nfon Mukete Recounts His Story

His publication was presented to the Bamenda public on Friday, November 27, 2015.

One more book has been added to the annals of Cameroon’s reunification story. The book entitled, “My Odyssey: The Story of Cameroon Reunification With Authentic Letters Of Key Players,” is authored by veteran Senator and Paramount Traditional Ruler of the Bafaws, Nfon Victor E.Mukete.

Despite his wealth and age, Victor E. Mukete thought it wise to put in writing his own version of Cameroon’s reunification story as an eye witness and key player. The 576-page book has 17 chapters. The English version has a brown hard cover while the French translation has a blue hard cover. It is sold at FCFA 15,000. During the presentation of the book at the Bamenda Congress Hall on Friday, November 27, 2015, the Governor of the North West Region, Adolphe Lele L’Afrique, thanked Senator Mukete for his brilliant role in the reunification process.

He said despite the odds, Nfon Mukete stood his grounds that Cameroon should be reunited and congratulated him, adding that he is a blessing to Cameroon and his book will impact the lives of many generations to come. While reviewing the book, a historian, Dr Anthony Ndi, said the book is peculiar because it carries manuscripts of key actors of the reunification process. He said such correspondence to the various players make the book more authentic. He said V.E Mukete is a living reality of the reunification process and should be given a pad on the back for putting his experience into writing.

According to Prof. Victor Julius Ngoh, the book contains unedited correspondence that gives it more weight. While tracing the path of Cameroon’s reunification, Prof. Ngo quoted President Ahmadou Ahidjo in 1959 as saying, “We want to be together with our brothers of Southern Cameroons. We shall negotiate as equals.” Senator Victor E. Mukete on his part appreciated the role played by the people of Bamenda during the reunification process.

He said “One thing I am sure of is that whatever happens, my readers will not fail to see something amusing or insightful in at least one of the letters in the book.  Born in 1918 to a very rich family, Nfon Mukete attended to some of the best schools in Cameroon, Nigeria and England.
