Two Suicide Bombers Killed in Kolofata

Government encourages security forces and urges greater collaboration with population.

Cameroon’s government spokesman and Communication Minister, Issa Tchiroma Bakary has once more congratulated security forces and vigilante groups for their successes in the ongoing war against the Boko Haram terrorist group in the Far North Region.

Talking to Cameroon Tribune in his Yaounde officeon December 14, Issa Tchiroma said two female suicide bombers were killed in Kolofata on Monday, December 14 in the morning as they tried to get access to the Mosque in the town. He said the leader of a local vigilante group intercepted the two suspects and asked them to identify themselves. The suspected suicide bombers, all girls, started escaping. The vigilante group leader threw an arrow that struck one of them. She detonated the explosive she had on her belt that killed her alone. The second girl discovering danger, ran and hid herself behind a tree. Members of the security forces who had been alerted, pursued her and asked her to surrender. They succeeded to kill her. The suicide bomber died without detonating her explosive.  The security forces took away the explosives-laden belt she wore.

Issa Tchiroma on behalf of President Paul Biya hailed the vigilance, courage and commitment of the security forces and vigilante groups. Thanks to their vigilance and determination, carnage was avoided. They were urged to keep on.  Government’s spokesman said the work of the army and vigilante groups is irreplaceable for they are fighting an invisible and unpredictable enemy. As such, the only way to win Boko Haram is to solicit the contribution of vigilante groups that work in synergy with security forces.

Due to the nature of the war against Boko Haram, the Minister calls for more vigilance on the part of the entire population in order to confront the scourge. He said local authorities have put in place an inclusive combat strategy. Family heads on their part, he said, have to heighten vigilance by considering unknown persons within their milieu as suspects. He reiterated President Paul Biya’s determination to eradicate Boko Haram, stating that victory in the war was just a matter of time. This was because of the heightened offensive of the Cameroonian forces, the gradual coming into force of the Lake Chad Basin Multinational Joint Task Force and the collaboration of the Nigerian forces.
