Vulgar Language Invaded The Music Industry

Music as part of culture gripped the Cameroonian society in 2015 in diverse ways.

Briefly defined as an artfully coordinated arrangement of sounds, hardly can any human being be indifferent to music. No doubt, music remains an exclusive business of humans. The purposes of songs or music are undeniably to cheer, soothe or excite. That is why even at war chants serve to excite, in competition music cheers up and for the hard-to-sleep, songs pacify.  But how have Cameroonians perceived their music industry in 2015?

Airing their varied opinions about music offered  in the Cameroonian context,  some residents of Buea came out very clear that nostalgia remains the order of the day among those averagely in their 40s. The longing for old music is a mark of revolt against what the youth, below 30 years of age, are either producing or consuming in the name of music. Mr Kingue Siga, a staff of the Regional Delegation of Secondary Education, was very crossed as he said:”Most of these immoral songs are in French.

These songs are frustrating to listen to.” He further regretted that such songs are destroying the image of our country. He intimates that singers of immoral songs grew up in environments suffering moral decadence.  Lukong Leslie, a Librarian at the University of Buea, says such vulgar language is not good for children. He advises that artists produce more educative song that can positively build society.

The melody and rhythm of music as integral parts of the art suffered little as compared to the wordings, gestures and postures expressed by the singers. It may not be forgotten so soon that the wordings of a particular song irked a local administrator in the West Region to ban the music in his area of command. But the ban-effect suffered a boomerang as many who had not listened to the composition went out in search of it.
