"Communicating in Standard English’" by Shey Peter Mabu was published by Sopecam in 2015.

The Cameroonian literary landscape has been enriched with the publication of a new book titled ‘Communicating In Standard English’. The book written by Shey Peter Mabu in the words of the author is a corrective guide for students and professionals who care about polishing their language. It reveals the other facet of the author of ‘Cleansing the Queen’ as he puts away the garment of entertainer to assume that of a pedagogue and communicator by rectifying some common mistakes in English and giving useful professional tips for journalists.

As such the book is divided into two main parts. The first part dwells on aspects of English grammar such as the correct use of prepositions, conjunctions and verbs as well as to avoid tautology, verbosity, misspelling words and avoid the influences of the French and pidgin languages on the English language. The second part is especially dedicated to media practitioners as it gives some useful professional tips for communicators throwing light on what is the editorial policy, legal hints and words processing techniques notably with the use of the editor’s code which is fast fading away from practise. There is also an appendix on certain legal and media terms as well as the Yaounde declaration of July 31, 1980.

The book is a welcomed gift from the senior journalist and former teacher especially at a time when the standards of the English language are falling in schools and the media landscape partly due to the influence of other languages and the carelessness of some users of the Queen’s language. Shey Peter Mabu has decided to share knowledge with posterity through books and as he says, it is a legacy he is bequeathing to the younger generation.
