Interview: “We Want to Install a cricket Culture in Cameroon”

Victor Agbor-Nso, president of the Cameroon cricket Federation.

Why open the season with a seminar?

It is not a seminar. It is the national forum on cricket. It is the first of its kind. Sports is not only practiced on the field. Before practice one has to have the theoretical notion of the sport. We decided to launch our season with this forum with participants coming from five of the ten Regions of Cameroon namely West, South West, Littoral, North West and Centre Regions. The participants who are from about thirty schools will go back with some equipment to enable continue practicing the game of cricket.

When do competitions begin notably the championship and the cup?

The year has just started and we always like to make use of the third term holiday which is the longest in Cameroon to organize the domestic joint championship and cup competitions because the majority of cricket players in Cameroon are students.

You just mentioned that cricket is practiced in only five of the ten Regions of Cameroon, are you going to continue introducing the game in the other Regions?

For now we are very satisfied with the five Regions. Cricket is a very expensive discipline. We can’t pretend to cover all the ten Regions all of a sudden. We are going progressively. Even in the United Kingdom, cricket is not played everywhere. The same holds for South Africa, Australia and India.

It’s been over a decade since cricket was introduced to Cameroon, what achievements have you made so far?

We have been able to create a federation, build a seat for the federation and constituted a national cricket team. The national team has taken part in international competitions three times. They have been to Nigeria, Ghana, South Africa and their performance was good. Again at the level of the cricket federation of Cameroon we are lucky to have a Cricket Without Boundaries official assisting us in youth development but being paid by the British Charity. Some British clubs want to start Cameroonian cricketers to start playing with them. The first Cameroonian to play with a British club will be leaving this year and he will be totally taken care of by the club. I know this is the beginning of nice things to come. Besides these achievements, thousands of young Cameroonians no enjoy playing the game of cricket.

What projects for the future?

We want to install a cricket culture in Cameroon. We will like to see more Cameroonian play cricket for foreign clubs. We look forward to having some good sponsorship for cricket development in Cameroon.
