Bilingualism Week:Mbalngong Takes The Lead

The 11th edition of the National Bilingualism Week was launched in Mbalngong on February 1, 2016.

The premises of the Government Bilingual High School Mbalngong in the Mefou and Akono Division were the venue of the launch of activities to mark the 11th edition of the National Bilingualism Week and the 13th edition of the National Bilingualism Day yesterday February 1, 2016. The theme for this year is “Bilingualism: “Gateway to quality education for sustainable development”.

The ceremony which takes place every first Friday of February every year is an occasion to sensitise Cameroonian students on national integration through the speaking of French and English, the two official languages. The event is organised in Cameroon by the Ministries of Secondary Education and Basic Education.

Speaking at the occasion, the Minister of Secondary Education, Jean Ernest Masséna Ngalle Bibehe said bilingualism is a strategic necessity and it calls for the contribution of all. He said government has never relented in its efforts in the promotion of bilingualism which is the cement of national unity and national integration. He called on teachers to work hand-in-glove to make the event a success. Students demonstrated their bilingualism skills through poems, sketches and songs. They also used this to pass on their message. Minister Ngalle Bibehe continued the launch to three other schools in Yaounde.

The Minister of Secondary Education will round off the bilingualism week on February 5, 2016 at the Presbyterian Secondary School Nkwen in the North West Region while the Secretary of State for Secondary education in charge of Teacher Training will close the week in Government Bilingual High School Ngousso in the Centre Region. In the same vein, the Minister of Basic education Youssouf Hadidjija Alim will close the bilingualism week in Limbe in the South West Region. The event took place in the presence of officials of Mefou and Akono Division, representatives of international organisations and invitees.
