Nigeria:Buhari Seeks Europe’s Support to Stem Vices

Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari is on a current advocacy tour in Europe.

President Muhammadu Buhari of Nigeria on Wednesday, February 3, 2016 told members of the European Parliament during their plenary session in Strasbourg, France that “Nigeria is facing the challenges of oil-theft and illegal bunkering in the Niger Delta as well as recovery of illicit funds. In this regard, Nigeria solicits the cooperation of the European Parliament to support the efforts aimed at stemming these vices.”

He used the occasion  to reiterate that, “Our attempt to restore security, curb corruption and fight crime will result not only in improving social stability in Nigeria but will re-open the doors for full economic relations with Europe and the rest of the world,” NAIJ.Com  news quoted him as saying. He assured European countries that, “Those who wish to invest in our country have immense opportunities and we intend to guarantee the security of people and investments brought to Nigeria.”

Buhari’s address at the European Parliament was one of the hallmarks of his current visit to France and the United Kingdom. He informed Europe of the efforts government has made to combat the terrorist group Boko Haram. “We have reorganised the Nigerian Armed Forces and repositioned them to deal decisively with the Boko Haram terrorists. Adamawa, Borno and Yobe states local government areas where the insurgents once dominated have been gradually recaptured,” he is quoted as saying. He declared that the activities of Boko Haram have been restricted to Sambisa Forest. Buhari called on world leaders to support the Lake Chad Basin Commission members fighting Boko Haram insurgencies.

While President Buhari was away on the European tour, the Nigerian Air Force Unmanned Combat Aerial Vehicle (UAV) destroyed a logistics base used by members of the Boko Haram Terrorists (BHT) group at Garin Moloma, about one Kilometre north of the Sambisa forest, media reports said.

Femi Adesina, Buhari’s spokesman said the President yesterday, flew to London. "The president will use the opportunity of his participation in the conference which is being co-hosted by Britain, Germany, Norway, Kuwait and the United Nations to continue his push for more global understanding, collaboration and support for Nigeria and other countries in the front lines of the war against terrorism who are striving to overcome its very adverse effects on affected populations," he specified.
