Commonwealth Day Preparations Kick Off

The 2016 edition of the Commonwealth Day will be celebrated on March 14, on the theme “An Inclusive Commonwealth.”

Cameroon will join Commonwealth member countries on Monday March 14, 2016 to commemorate the Commonwealth Day. In prelude, preparations are underway in the Ministry of External Relations to give the event the grandeur it deserves. Information gathered from the Commonwealth Department in the Ministry of External Relations, indicates that weeklong activities to mark the day in Cameroon will be launched on Monday March 7, 2016.

According to the Director of Commonwealth in the Ministry of External Relations, Dr Solomon Tatah, a series of meetings have been held with the diplomatic corps of Commonwealth member countries in Cameroon, government ministries and members of the Civil Society concerned. He said proposals on the activities to mark the event as well as the venue to host this year’s closing ceremony have been made, pending approval by authorities.

However, Cameroon Tribune gathered that an essay competition for pupils, college and university students on the theme of the event, media campaigns, sports walk, exhibitions amongst others, will constitute major highlights of the event placed under the auspices of the Minister of External Relations.

This year’s theme, “Inclusive Commonwealth”, is intended to celebrate the diversity of the Commonwealth, which is made up of over two billion people represented in all the continents of the globe. Schools, universities, government departments, civil society organisations and other stakeholders are enjoined to take part in the celebrations of the event that will be commemorated across the country.
